Umpiring

2025 Umpire TrainingSUNDAY, MARCH 2ND
(last updated 3/2/25)

Where and when?
Training consists of two elements:

FIELD MECHANICS
On Sunday, March 2nd, from 8:30am-2:30pm, we will hold an instructional clinic designed to provide basic umpire training. No prior experience is necessary. The on-field clinic will cover basic positioning, making calls, and proper signals.  With rain threatening, the clinic will now be held in the multipurpose room at Lincoln Middle School (NOT at Bayport Park), still beginning at 8:30am.  If it dries out during the day, we can simply move out onto the Lincoln blacktop.

RULES INSTRUCTION
Additionally, all trainees – regardless of division - must attend the rules instruction, which is graciously conducted by District 4 umpire training staff via a four-part Zoom series.  These sessions will be recorded and made available as YouTube videos shortly after each session is conducted; please make sure to have watched or attended them all by March 2nd.  The sessions will reference the 2025 rulebook, but Little League does not provide us with paper copies anymore; instead, please download the "Little League Rulebook" app and read through it.  It will update automatically as rules are modified.

Part 1 - Recorded February 5th Covered New Rules, Regulations, Rules 1 and 2 (Safety, Mandatory Play, Decorum, Equipment, and Definitions) and rule changes for 2025

Part 2 - Recorded February 12th - Covered Rules 3 through 7 (Beginning and Ending the Game, Batters and Runners)

Part 3 - Recorded February 19th - Covered Base Awards, Obstruction, and Interference

Part 4 - Recorded February 26th - Covered Rules 8 and 9 (the Pitcher and Umpire, plus review of Minor and Major divisions baseball interleague rules)

How does the on-field training work?
Separate on-field sessions will be held for each division.  Please attend according to the staggered schedule shown below for the Division(s) in which you intend to umpire.  If, for example, you wish to umpire in A, AA, and AAA/Majors, come for all sessions.

What next?
After you have completed the training, you will likely fall into one of two categories:

- Volunteering for a specific team (i.e. you are a coach, manager, parent, or older sibling): in this case, you are encouraged to contact your team’s manager and volunteer to help him/her cover umpire duties that will have already been assigned to the manager prior to the March 2nd training

- "Free agent” (i.e. you may be a junior umpire, former league parent, community member at large, or a coach/manager/parent looking to umpire more): in this case, your contact information will be circulated to all major and minor division managers immediately after the March 2nd training and they will contact you to help cover their umpire duties as needed.

If you need a refresher on AAA/majors mechanics, please refer to this live-action instructional video made during a scrimmage in 2021: On-Field Mechanics

No make-up training sessions will be held.  If you have any questions, please contact Jim Quilici, Director of Umpires, at [email protected].  Please be sure to check back here periodically for any updates.

The Little League Rulebook has gone online - for instructions on how to download the app to your phone, click here: 2025 Rulebook

Also, Alameda Little League has some local rules that the Board of Directors has chosen to implement. Did you know that a pitcher in AA can pitch only 2 innings while a Majors pitcher can pitch an entire game (provide they stay below the daily maximum pitch count for their age)?  Press this link to read the 2025 Local Rules and Pitching Guidelines.
